Generic Black Bars

Filed under Garry's Mod, General, Other

Somewhere, at some point in time, likely in the last year or so, all of Garry’s Mod’s worst comic makers, rag doll posers and graphic “artists” decided to get together and have a conversation about their crappy screenshots. They all got together and asked, “How can we continue to make terrible, cliched screenshots that lack any sense of depth whatsoever,” (aside from a filthy use of Depth of Field), “and stop getting such displeased and awful,” (yet appropriate), “feedback?” Of course it probably looked a lot less punctuated than that and involved a lot less grammar but whatever all those idiots said was something to that extent.

The solution was, of course, “Hey! Let’s a throw a couple of random-ass black bars on the top and bottom of the image! That’s something I can do in MS Paint or in my dad’s pirated copy of CS4.” How could we all have been so stupid all along? I can’t believe I didn’t think to do that! I should’ve known, everyone should’ve known, that the secret to making amazing screenshots, apparently, is to stick a black bar on the top and bottom of every jpeg.

Am I the only one who isn’t crazy, here? If your screenshot sucks, it’s going to continue to suck no matter how much useless black space you add to it. I’m sure some will argue, “Oh, but it’s like you’re watching a movie and it’s a stylistic device.” If I wanted to feel like I was watching a movie, I might, oh I don’t know, go watch a fucking movie. And you can’t call something a stylistic device, not only because this “something” is really just two black bars, but because every other idiot on Facepunch does it.

Conclusion: Adding a black bar to the top and bottom of your screenshots isn’t “creative” or “cinematic,” you’re just making a horse’s ass out of yourself and promoting the use of even more non sequitur bullshit that twelve year olds are already infamous for.

But before I end this post, let’s take a look at some of the most recent examples seen on Facepunch:

(I didn’t bother crediting these photos because I’m in a decent mood today. Associating any name with these photos would just bring unending shame (and truth) upon the creator of them and they probably wouldn’t learn from it anyway.)

Another screenshot from the flood of generic Left 4 Dead 1 and Left 4 Dead 2 crossover-themed shitty screenshots that have been flooding the internet as of late. The addition black bars doesn’t justify the trite, mutilation of these characters.

And if you can’t see the cliche and stupidity of the last three, you’re probably one of the people making these retarded screenshots.

Ciao.

Revelation Mother Reich RP

The title doesn’t lie, nor does the picture. We’re not done with Reich RP. Not yet, folks. Allow me to give a brief summary of a thread that’s up right now on their forum (which happens to be using the same color scheme that our forum is using >_>).

It started with Matteo announcing his leave from the community with this post.

It was followed by the usual butthurt replies of some forum mods and witty one liners by some of the less mature members. But I started feeling the need to intervene, partly on behalf of Matteo (who I’ve never actually talked to before) and partly on behalf of decency. Josef Nader (an admin there) along with some others, were making increasingly pretentious posts, trying to portray Reich RP as some sort of master Aryan race of GMod communities (these posts were also followed with witty one line responses by blind followers, supporting the claims). As such, I decided to post myself, with this.

Playing my usual role of the (attempting-to-be-helpful) devil’s advocate, I awaited reply. Some opposition from Josef Nader (which I quote in the following post) and other stuff.

This post must’ve been enough to get someone’s attention upstairs because Mr. Papa replied with this:

That’s the gist of the thread. I encourage you to read the whole thread that you can find here. Though you’ll need a forum account there to view it.

The point of this post is not to acknowledge certain Reich RP members’ incompetence, but to acknowledge Mr. Papa’s respectable understanding. It’s a rare thing to see one community leader(Paradox RP) recognize the faults of their community, but to see two do it as a result of my advice is rather interesting. I hope this streak continues within more communities that don’t have decent standards, and lets all hope Mr. Papa stays true to his word. If he speaks true of his intentions, then perhaps I’ve just prevented the creation and growth of another TnB.

The ideal admin system for a GMod RP Server

Since the dawn of time, man has been blessed with retarded RP admins. Whether it’s admins not doing their jobs, trying too hard at their jobs, abusing their powers, favoring certain players with their powers or any other form of retardation in administration, GMod RP servers have always been prone to such. Now, we all know this is not a secret. Sadly, this has grown to be common sense, common knowledge and commmon expectation of GMod servers in recent years.

I’ve had this idea for a while, and I’ve always wanted to try it. An admin system that would work, would be volunteer, competent admins who moderate the server while not being allowed to roleplay at the same time. In other words, if a player is RPing on the server, that player may not have access to admin powers at the same time. Likewise, if a player is moderating a server, he or she (not sure why I even bother saying “she”) will not have access to in-character actions.

The downside to this is that it would be harder to find more willing admins, as they wouldn’t always be occuppied (because, hopefully, the system would work well enough to improve the server overall).

The pros to this system are valuable and well needed. The new notable ones are:

  • Less of a bias
  • Roleplay wouldn’t be affected (if not at all, hopefully not as much) as it is currently
  • It would be much more difficult to use admin powers for in-character gain

The list could go on, though that’s the general set of ideas. If a community has a playerbase with enough dedication and fervor, this system could, theoretically, be implemented and put to good use. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

P.S. Things like this wouldn’t happen if this system was used properly

Afforded Rebuttal: Faust on Paradox RP

This post is mainly to direct readers of this blog to a post Faust made on his own blog which you can find here. I’m providing a link because his blog seems rather new and I’d like him to have the forum for his defense that he deserves, as I have mine. The post is in reply and rebuttal to my previous post critiquing Paradox RP. There are only a few things I’d like to comment on in his post but before I do I’d like to make a few things noted. The first being, I was quite surprised to see someone of the GMod community mustering a respectable, mature response to one of my own posts. As such, I’d like to express my appreciation to Faust for being so respectable in this medium as such posts are becoming fewer and fewer (or so I’ve noticed). Furthermore I’d like to thank Faust for his notes on our community in his opening paragraph.  That being said, I’ll begin.

In regards to the current Paradox admins not having “ran” Aftermath RP, I’ll clarify. I hold to the belief the community members, not admins, run the communities, admins simply maintain them. This is what I saw going on at Aftermath RP (and it’s how things should go for the most part, the members are the most important aspect of the community), as such, it is what I was referring to. My statement was simply a guideline with the rest of my post ; it was no attempt to trivialize any person or community.

Furthermore, about “putting your fist down” as an administrator: I agree with said policy. I do believe, however, that it can be done without such a use of invective and vulgar demands to the community. I am not afraid to act strictly as situations call for it, as I’m sure my fellow administrators can confirm.

As far as making this public goes, I felt it was the only effective way to get Snaggy’s attention. Perhaps I wasn’t rhetorically skilled enough to grab his attention before, as I tried speaking to him on the issue several times (some of which were before he even began his community). Additionally, with the increasing number of blogs in recent months, posts such as these are beginning to seem increasingly casual, and for that I apologize.

In closing, Faust, I respect your defense of your community as I respect just about anyone who is willing to, respectably, stand up for their community. I’m glad you took the time to respond and I welcome to you to contact me on Steam Friends (guitarfreaksg) if you wish to discuss anything further, in private. Additionally, I’ll welcome you to post on this blog if you want to. Also, I don’t believe you were coming off too over the top or condescending in your defense. I don’t see any carried away writing in your post so I would advise you not to feel the need to justify it. And finally, thank you for taking the time to read and anyone who finds this direct response to Faust irrelevant or boring, I apologize.

The title explains most of it, I decided to check out this Paradox RP community run by Snaggy. I’m still not sure why it’s called Paradox RP of all things. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that they’re trying to improve upon things that have failed in the past (Stalker RP, post apocalyptic RP) while using the same methods of execution. Or maybe the name just sounds cool.

I began by checking out their forum, nothing too notable. Though I was a little surprised by the admin system they have. Their admin team consists of some jumbled, constipated ranking system that’s not quite clear to understand in terms of who has power over who. They’ve got ERAs, BAs, TAs, OSAs, and so on. So many As they don’t seem to know how to fit them into a clear ranking structure. I can’t help but note this admin system. I can’t help but note this system is strangely similar to TnB’s admin roster.
Additionally, many of the admins are some of the people who were running some similar, prior communities (Aftermath for example) right before they all collapsed.

Paradox RP Admin Roster

With a final note about the Paradox RP administration I’ll show one “announcement” made by an administrator on their forum.

Paradox RP Forum Announcement

I’m a firm believer that a comunity’s administration should have some respect for maturity and decency when interacting with the community. Emotional posts such as this one are unprofessional, immature and disrespectful. Even if the community is behaving unruly, one should never match their behavior by cussing them out through the authoritative voice of an admin. If the post wasn’t so whiny sounding I might’ve confused it for someone trying to play the Drill Sergeant from Full Metal Jacket.

Finally, I went into the server for about fifteen minutes and was bored out of my mind. There were eleven people on, it was running a version of LemonadeScript with some edited GUI. There were no titles to see as the scoreboard was removed from the script version, I assume to prevent metagaming. Most players seemed to avoid me when approached, and it had an overall feel of the “private” RPs that go on at TnB (no, that’s not an allusion to cybering). It was quite dull and the only thing amusing I noticed was this individual conspicuously attempting to fling some gas cans at me that he had glued together.

Maybe I happened to choose a bad day on their server, maybe that individual was not like all the rest, MAYBE I’m just bad luck. But if not, Paradox RP would do best to follow some friendly advice.

In conclusion, this post is mainly a message to Snaggy. Since talking to you directly didn’t work I’ll give you this post so you can look back and reflect on my advice a bit more. I respect you and I respect the fact that you’re trying to make a fair community. I also believe, however, that if you don’t avoid the ways of previous failed communities you will see undesirable results. Your community seems to be run by most of the people that were running Aftermath RP right before its demise and your community seems to have mostly the same ideas for storylines with the exception of Stalker RP (and we all know how well Stalker RP has done in the past.). The short solution: listen to others, get some new ideas in your community, don’t kid yourself or anyone else with that jumbled, “formal” admin roster, and encourage some interraction on your server. If you don’t try to change some of your ways you will most likely see untimely and undesirable results within your community, regardless of how well or how poor everyone might RP there.

The Repetition of Stupidity

At this early hour I am going to return, once again, to the complication of Taco n Banana and Garry’s Mod. Every so often I’ll decide to quell my (unfortunate) curiosity and see how TnB is fairing (or how they aren’t fairing for that matter).

Now, before I delve into the unsurprising but juicy parts of this post, I’d like to note a few things. I recently registered a forum account on the TnB forum as my old one did not work (we’ll see why in a short while). As per standard modern-day forum protocol, I received a confirmation email. All that matters in this context is the title of the email I saw:

Serious RP - a questionable description

"Serious RP" - a questionable description

The content in question here is, obviously, the phrase, “Serious RP”. It’s nice to see some things haven’t changed. So instead of having to write new criticisms on this trite, false claim, I’ll simply note its presence. Fast forward a few minutes, my account is working and I’m reading posts. Keep in mind I haven’t read all the important posts so I’m sure this particular blog post would be much larger if I had.

The next note I’d like to make is that of a rule posted at TnB, specifically posted aside from any others. And that is as follows:

The article establishes yet another hypocrisy within TnB, as Dave Brown has repeatedly trolled communities in blog posts, IRC channels and other chats. Notably, in a blog post he made at our affiliate, The Digital Soul. Their administration calls for neutrality, their administrator calls for immaturity.  Their administration calls for authoritative removals of rule breakers, their administrator ignores their proposals and becomes a rule breaker. They request complaints, they crucify those that make respective obligations. Hypocrisy, hypocrisy, hypocrisy.

In the past two excerpts, I have cleared up some talking points of TnB’s problems which I’ll be referring to shortly. This is to clarify that they are no secret to anyone, including those who have not read past blog posts that are currently unavailable. And so, we begin.
The content matter we’ll be looking at today is a post from Dave Brown. It reveals the unsurprising fact that TnB has made yet another enemy (or pissed off an old one again) and has had their forum, their databases and their backups hacked. How unfortunate.

If youre reading this, you ARE the resistance.

TnB members, if you're reading this, you ARE the resistance.

Before I begin, please pardon his spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, and pardon me not taking the time to  correct them.

The highlighted part is the most absurd, silly, trite and as a result, controversial. Despite the statement sounding like something out of a recent Terminator movie, there is some sophomoric meaning to be looked at within it. Mr. Brown claims that he, nor anyone else in TnB, is capable of understanding why TnB is attacked and criticized. Before I try to understand why the community puts up with his lack of faith in their understanding, I’ll answer his question. TnB is attacked and criticized so much because DSRP was right and still is right about how dreadfully awful the community is. In almost every regard. If the community wouldn’t alienate itself from and insult other communities as well as members within, they might not be hated so much. If they don’t like being attacked they should stop making enemies routinely. There is no Jihad going on here, nobody is jealous of TnB for what they have. People attack TnB because it has poor RP ethics, poor administration and stupid people attempting to try their hand at logic. If you want to reason with someone try reasoning with me, I’ve been a proponent of TnB criticisms for a while and no representative from TnB has spoken to me or tried reasoning with me ; the claim is completely false.

Next, Mr. Brown’s comment about TnB having “grown to become bigger, stronger, and more mature.” I shouldn’t have to comment on the part about TnB being mature, but I will. I know I’m not alone with what I see here (and what I don’t see). I don’t see TnB growing bigger or stronger. I see TnB making more enemies each day and causing more members to harness distastes, dislikes and distrusts of the community. I don’t see TnB growing more mature. I see TnB maintaining its infamous hypocrisy and arrogant stupidity with such posts like the ones that I’ve mentioned and those that have been mentioned by the folks at DSRP.

Following this, Master Brown praises the community for the supposed fact that they have “always pulled together in times of…hardship.” This is probably the most pathetic Dave Brown quote I’ve seen yet. He goes on to request that TnB members refill their forums with the (mostly) poorly written, crappy and cliched stories and logs that have haunted TnB for years now. King Brown gets one thing right when he says that such content “is what sets us apart from others.” Perhaps all others except for Reich RP or HGN, as the content is often so uneducated or pungent that other, smarter communities would not dare to host or allow the production of content of similar nature.

The post is concluded with some quotes (none by any recognized scholars, writers or any hint of useful insight). In the first quote he makes a contention, then he conflicts it with his second, self-made quote. By his “logic”, monkeys must be capable of creating something (looks like TnB should have the amount production of the U.S. during World War II if that’s the case), as he says that monkeys can destroy things that geniuses create. Well, I’ll simply respond by saying, it takes a true genius to create something and keep it standing. Maybe a genius wouldn’t have insulted the near entirety of the non-TnB Garry’s Mod players. Maybe a genius wouldn’t have alienated his community from others. Maybe a genius wouldn’t continue to insult his own members and create even more enemies, and maybe that same genius would be smart enough to understand why his community was being attacked if he didn’t follow the above guidelines. A genius wouldn’t try to make motivating posts furthering TnB’s arrogant, intolerant, master race attitude.

I’ll conclude myself by leaving some quotes TnB might learn from.

The Talk on Titles. Again.

This post is quite overdue as I found little time (or little motivation) in previous weeks to write it .

I decided to take a brief tour among GMod RP servers again, not expecting to find too much variety or improvements in classic criticisms. I did, however, expect to see something interesting as Reich RP had a server up. Before venturing any further, I’d like to note, and I’d like the reader to note, that the reason for my posting of this is based on the hopes I have that the community will improve their standards and their server. With that being said, I’ll talk about titles.

Now, what they’re doing wrong. The first player has their title set as, “Skinny, Funky looking man.” I’m not sure if they would’ve used the word funky had their character been white. Either way, the title is so clearly erroneous (with the exception of the word, “skinny”) as “funky” is an opinionated adjective. In other words, he might not appear funky to everyone. This is a confirmation that the player is falsely assuming that all the other players share his Out of Character opinions about his appearance.

Perhaps the second player is a disillusioned author trying to adapt his taste for noir stories to Garry’s Mod Roleplay or maybe he just doesn’t know how to set a good title (we’ll go with the latter). One character’s goals, plans, motives, opinions or thoughts are of no concern to anyone simply reading a title. If the player making Fred Mertz’s title wants to reveal his goals to the rest of the in-game world then he must find an in-character forum, aside from titles, to do so.

Now for something a little different.

First we saw hyphens, then we saw periods. But now, we see both in Civil Protection names.

I will admit, I am slightly guilty of this criticism myself. However, I believe it is made up for in the fact that all the people who played CPs on the OB server with such arrangements of punctuation did fair jobs. As for Reich RP, the Civil Protection performance was poor and lackluster. I’m not sure if they were trying to make up for it with their elaborate squad names and ranks. For example, they walked right by this guy without blinking an eye:

Finally, if you’re wondering why it’s called “Reich RP” yet there are no Nazis anywhere, you share my curiosity. I was slightly appalled when I joined their server to find not the Third Reich, but rather the cliched Civil Protection ruling over City 18 once again (the titles soon distracted me, however). Beta testing or not, the above criticisms remain in my mind. I hope Reich RP can improve its performance because they seem to have (or at least they did at the time) a decent playerbase. Perhaps they have improved already, perhaps not. But with the above in mind, I will leave you with one last title I saw. I don’t believe I need to make any commentary on it.

Is there a sign that says Dead Ringer storage on my garage?

Finally, as it has been spoken of for quite a while, Our Benefactors is getting a Team Fortress 2 server. The server will go up on or around June 20th and will have the same IP address as the Garry’s Mod server. As such, the Garry’s Mod server will be going down. This is largely due to the slowing playerbase, along with the fact that I’ve neither the mettle nor the determination to maintain it any longer. More on that later. Regarding the server, perhaps it will return some day, perhaps it won’t. The concept plot below will be addressed at a later time. Overall, everyone can look forward to enjoying the angst of the new weapon lottery system in Team Fortress 2 on an OB server.

*Timeline is advanced 10-15 years ahead of HL2: Ep 2 Incident*

::General Setup::

Humanity on Earth is standing on its own legs again.

Soon after the fall of a major Citadel, the resistance bolstered to staggering numbers, and the Universal Union was routed from power. The people drove the Union out, eliminating most of what was known as the Combine from the face of the planet. But this does not mean all are gone, merely a large number of them.Surviving Combine units left alive are scattered, stranded and outnumbered, withdrawing into hiding and waiting for the day they can rejoin the main forces of the Universal Union and retake the Biosphere. Sympathizers infecting the ranks of mankind, although few and far between, assist the remaining forces, feeding intel and supplies to the remnants of the UU. The Combine on Earth are conducting reconassiance, gathering intelligence and progress and trying to find a way to open up a rift to bring reinforcements.

The Resistance has involved all of the remaining population of Earth; every man, woman and child participating in some way to assist their species to grasp control of their homes once again. Out of the efforts to unite the people against the common enemy, the Earth Federation is born: now a democratic government with a trained military and somewhat abundant resources. Differences between people of all kinds take a backseat in priority, and most humans work hand-in-hand to combat the threat that has terrorized their families. Productivity for all newly-founded factories, research, development and agriculture skyrocket, exceeding pre-war production by large margins.

Scientific development has led to various new technologies, although not yet wide-scale, things like nano-technology manufacturing, biogenetic manipulation and engineering have advanced tenfold due to the remnants of the Combine. Things like Medical training, equipment, and procedures as well as communications, synthetic replication and precision engineering with electronic development have made major breakthroughs with the use and reverse-engineering of Combine technology. Energy manipulation research has made things like “plasma shielding” and “pulse weaponry” possible, with smart munitions along the way.

Man has won an enormous victory, but the war has yet to be won.
